Don AllanAllow me to introduce myself. I am Don Allan, a long time farmer and let me tell you, I love what I do. From 1972 to 1987 I operated up to 3,000 acres of land in the Bentley area until the farm sold in 1987. In 2003 I returned to farming southwest of Sylvan Lake (1.5 mi. west of Hwy 781 on south side of Township Road 382.)

Some of you may know me and for others this is our first meeting, I hope that for all of you this website becomes a helpful resource for you.

I would also like to note that this website is updated periodically, so make sure you check back from time to time. I am working towards building a website that will not only provide you with products to purchase, but also provide you with many helpful and interesting resources and information.

AllanHay.com is not only the address of our website but is our registered farm and business name with the Province of Alberta.

We are moving a lot of hay right now with our self-unloading trucks. Your order would be welcome. To place your order please contact us by phone at (403)887-1728 or email dballan@telus.net .

We continually apply the best technique known to us to shorten drying time. An addition to our haying tools this year has been the incorporation of an automated hay preservative kit on the round baler with in chamber moisture tester. Moisture content of hay is checked every three seconds while baling. Should a damp spot be encountered in the windrow an appropriate amount of preservative is applied. This enables us to provide better quality, dust free hay to our customers. The product used is a combination of two products naturally found in the intestine of animals.

As of May 2009 we have sold hay, straw and greenfeed to customers across Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Northwest Territories. From Calgary in the south to Yellowknife in the north, from the Princeton Region in the west to Wiseton, SK in the east, customers have come to appreciate our fine hay and friendly service. The feedback from our customers continues to be a real encouragement to us. Most of previous years' customers keep coming back for their current year's needs.

International sales to the United States of America and other countries are referred to our export agent who handles the negotiations and logistics on our behalf.

Current prices on above hay starts at $.05 per pound and goes up from there.  Prices vary with week to week local market conditions and estimated protein content, bale weight, condition, etc. Delivery is available from rates as low as $10.00 per round bale (fluctuates with current fuel price and varies with size of load, bale weight, distance, etc.) and $1.00 per small square bale. Our load sizes range from 1 to 34 bales for rounds and 20 to 1000 for small squares. Round bales weighed to date range from 1,000 to 1,800 pounds with most of them weighing 1,150 to 1,350 lb.

Moisture content is below 15% on most bales at time of baling. Most of the feed analyses show moisture to be about 10%. As a result we guarantee all bales sold directly from farm to be free of internal mould.

When raking and baling alfalfa we are diligent to only operate when the moisture is adequate to prevent shattering. It’s hard to shut the balers down in the afternoon on a sunny day but our customers appreciate the leafier product that we provide.

Feed analysis: Done on a request basis. To view some of our feed analyses click here.

Round bales are made by a CASE IH RBX562 round baler and are net wrapped to shed precipitation and minimize wicking up ground moisture.  We never handle bales with a grapple fork so the moisture seal on the surface of the bale is left intact.

Small square bales are made by a Hesston baler and stacked with a New Holland 1033 Stackliner bale wagon.

We have baled four fields of our premium second cut mixed hay in small square bales this year. People are very pleased with the quality of this hay. It was all baled without having received any precipitation while in the windrow. The stacks are all tarped and the hay is in excellent condition. Alpacas, sheep, calves and horses across the province are really enjoying this special treat.

Friends and neighbours who put up first cut hay with their own equipment in small squares look to us to assist them in the marketing of their hay.

I have been a hay grower since I started haying with my father on his farm at Bentley in the late 1950s. It has always been a joy to produce the best hay that we could as we worked with the meteorologists who endeavor to give us the best forecast from day to day.

We look forward to hearing from you via telephone at 403-887-1728. For those who are toll free to the Red Deer exchange, dial 357-1770 first so you can reach us at no cost.

I answer all emails at dballan@telus.net.
